A new generation in the vineyard

Since 2025, young farmer Jakob Margesin has been responsible for the vineyards and wines at Greiterhof. He came to know the work from an early age, helping alongside his grandfather Karl and his father Clemens, who shaped and developed winegrowing at the farm over many decades.

The Biosüdtirol story about Greiterhof tells more about Jakob’s connection with the vineyard and cellar. At the 2025 Vigiljoch wine festival, Jakob presented Greiterhof wines as part of an exchange among local producers.

After attending the Fachoberschule für Landwirtschaft agricultural high school in Auer, specialising in viticulture and oenology, Jakob deepened his knowledge through further training and practical experience in Tuscany. Today he combines those experiences with what has grown at Greiterhof over generations.

The family has cultivated its orchards according to organic Bioland guidelines since 1995. Since 2024, the vineyards have been in conversion to organic farming. Vigilius and Souvignier Gris Sekt are therefore not yet presented as organic products. Healthy soils, careful work and products with a clear origin remain at the centre.

PIWI: robust vines, new wines

Vigilius and Souvignier Gris Sekt are based on PIWI grape varieties. These vines have a high natural resistance to common fungal diseases. This can significantly reduce plant-protection treatments and tractor passes through the vineyard, benefiting the soil, energy use and the environment. For wine lovers, PIWI wines are also an invitation to discover lesser-known grape varieties and their distinctive aromas. Learn more about PIWI grape varieties from PIWI International.
